is it really sunday already? do i really have to go back to work tomorrow :( so sad. why do weekends, especially the long ones, always fly by?
i had a post all written up for thursday about my run, but then i ended up getting out of work early and got on the road before posting it... oops!
it was pretty much the most struggling to get out the door i have ever had on a morning run. i tried to come up with any excuse in my head not to go, or any random time i could make it up. but eventually i just put on my clothes and left. i was soooo glad that i did and got it done, plus it always makes my day better when i run before work.
10.0 miles/1:28:16/8:50 avg pace
we ended up making a last minute trip down the coast to my parent's house thursday after work. it was so nice to get down there and have a little escape from everything. we got a lot of relaxing in, a lot of eating, and some running too.
friday i had a recovery 6 miler planned, but somehow between napping and eating i never got it done :) that's ok... sometimes we all need weekends like that!
i have always been kind of hesitant to go down there during weeks when i have long runs, just because i am out of my normal routine and routes. i have done a couple 12 milers, but nothing longer than that, and i had 17 on the schedule for this week.
saturday morning we got up, but i was sooo sleepy. we eventually hit the road about 8:30. chris and i semi-mapped out a route, part of it was the normal path in avila beach that we have run on, but then we had to add quite a bit on. we climbed some hills and ran down the frontage road that takes you from avila beach, through shell beach and into pismo beach. it was a beautiful day... warm and sunny but the cool ocean breeze was there to cool us off. i love the weather down there, i wish i could take it back with me up to the bay.
honestly, i have been kind of struggling with my long runs lately. although i am trying to slow it down, i still have these thoughts in the back of my head that i need to be going faster or that i should be able to any time i might want to. since i was running with chris for a majority of this run i just assumed that i would be able to run like i have in the past on my long runs (8:30-8:40 avg) and that wasn't the case. i also tend to forget things like i am still building up my base, and as i am doing this i am going to be slower. i didn't give myself a whole lot of recovery time before jumping into marathon training and increasing my miles, but again this stuff i don't tend to think too clearly about while running.
long story short, i was tired and kind of upset at the end of this run. on the way back to the house, i realized how much faster it was than my long runs the past few weeks and also how much longer it was, since i have just started building up. i have had a great week of running, and need to be happy and not be so hard on myself which i know... sometimes the brain just gets a little silly and cloudy in the middle of running, at least for me, and i have to take a step back after runs to really look at them clearly.
17.0 miles/2:34:23/9:05 avg pace
i fueled normally during this run... water + salt tablets (3 total) + 3 gu's at mile 4, 8.5, and 13.
we then had a relaxing rest of the 4th of july... ate a lot of good food and enjoyed spending time with my family (and also 6 dogs... 2 of ours, 2 of my parents and 2 of my brothers... FULL house! sorry no pics, i know BOOO on me).
we made it back home early this afternoon and i wanted to get out for my recovery run that i skipped from friday. i have been wanting to try to do them the day after long runs, which i usually take off, so this was a good chance. my legs are usually heavy and slow my first run of the week, and today they felt that way a little, but actually felt better than they have on a recovery run in a while. i might incorporate this into my schedule more often, just to get the muscles loosened up.
6.0 miles/56:19/9:23 avg pace
total miles for the week: 46
overall another great week of running :)
hope you all had a great weekend!! i opened my reader for a minute and saw i have over 300 posts to read... see what happens when i take a few days break off the computer :) i will be catching up with you all soon!

Time flies when you're having fun! I'm glad you had a fun weekend with your family (and lots of dogs!). Looks like you got some good runs in even with the traveling. I'm also hesitant to do long runs in areas I don't know too well...I like to know what's coming and I definitely don't want to get lost! 17 is a looong way to go! Nice work!
Catching up on blogs can be so daunting...I'm sometimes tempted to just hit "mark all as read."
I've had a hard time with my long-er runs lately too! ugh, its frustrating. way to get out and just go on thursday!
I'm Way impressed by the 17-miler on the 4th too! even if you didn't feel great at the end - its pretty cool to think you started off a Holiday with some serious mileage!! :)
I just wish I could have the running weeks you have!!! This work shit has got to go! I will win the lottery one day!
I'm very jealous that you got to go to Avila Beach! Just getting away is so exciting!!!
Well done for getting out there, even when your everything was trying to convince you not to. That's awesome.
It is always hard when there's so many reasons NOT to run or get the workouts in. Holiday weekends are the worst - so much food, drink and good times. Who wants to get up early with all that going on!?
I was also upset with my long run this weekend. Pfitzinger knows what he is doing so we should trust him right?
Aron, great week of running!
Getting out the door is the hardest part. well done!
I can't believe the long weekend is over, too. They go too fast. And I'm so tired...too much fun this weekend. I hate Mondays.
The weekend did go by fast! Luckily, I have today off, but I am dreading going back to work tomorrow.
Looks like you had a great week of running. You are very fast! I know how you feel about those long runs and trying to run them faster.
Glad you enjoyed the long weekend with yor family and were able to get your long run in too -- impressive!
Sounds like a great trip - and you got in a ton of miles!
How do you carry your salt tablets with you - do you have that little dispenser thingie? It seems like it would work well but may be a little bit overkill.
great week of running! i did my recovery runs after my long run during my marathon training and i liked it better, especially since the first couple of really long runs beat up my legs. it was nice to be able to stretch via running the next day
wow that is a lot of blog posts to read!!!! what is your blog-reading fuel????? hehehe. i have a question about your GU! lol, um.. do you use regular gu? i have discovered gu roctane and reeeeally love it. i am not sure if it's truly any different in practice than regular gu but marketing gets me every time. the vanilla orange is delish!!
goooooooooood job on your runs-- 17 miles is AWESOME and it's tough to make it through such a long run when you are having thoughts beating you up, but i'm glad that you thought back and made peace with it. cuz seriously you had a great run! but you must get told that all the time and what really matters is how you feel!!! so i'm glad you feel good :) and 46 miles-- you run girl! :)
GREAT job on your runs this week! Keeping a 9.0 mm pace on a 17 mile run is terrific.
Sounds like a really nice weekend. A little break from the computer is nice sometimes!
Great job on all runs, as always!
Sounds like a great weekend! Nice job getting out and running when you didn't feel like it.
Sounds like a fun weekend!
Great job getting out there to run! I actually never have that problem :)
Nice job getting that 17 miler in. Sometimes those long runs just give you way too much time to think. it sounds like you are doing everything right though!
I totally relate-- I've been slowing down my long runs too and every time I do I start panicking about being able to hold my marathon pace for that long. BUT! All the elites do it, every fast runner I know does it, so it must work. I think it's mostly about getting used to being on your feet that long. You did a great job. 17 miles isn't a joke and ESPECIALLY not on the Avila/Shell/Pismo cliffs-- yikes!
Nice job on the runs last week. Running really can make your brain do funny things. I always this once I run a faster pace, I should be able to hit that pace again on a long run, no problem. We forget about all those other things that play into it. :)
NIcely done!!
you really are doing great at consistently slowing yourself down for the longer runs. i am starting to focus on that again and surprised at how hard it feels sometimes.. I like seeing a faster time!
you had a great week of running! I can relate to thinking like you do during the runs but lsd are in the plan for a reason!
sounds like a great 4th weekend. it's so sad they always go so quickly....
I think being flexible for me has been a key to remaining happy while exercising.
Cool ocean breezes are the best, aren't they? Wish I could run near one!
46 miles isn't shabby!
Read through your other posts too, wow 2000 miles for the year, you got it in the bag! Look at all those marathons on your plate.
Great job on the runs this weekend! That is an amazing pace for a 17.0 miler :) Have a great week!
Awesome weekend, you crammed in a lot. 17 miles, wahoo!
I like doing an easy run the day after my long runs. It definitely loosens up my legs.
We as runners are always so hard on ourselves, which is so silly when you are able to put it in perspective. Try to focus on how amazing it is that you are running 17 MILES on a holiday weekend, when the rest of the country is furthering the obesity epidemic!
Haha, not really (or maybe...) but you deserve to be rewarded, and keep up the great work! Your runs are always inspring!
Sounds like a great time with a full house. I agree with how weekends tend to fly by.
That was definitely a great week of running!
You're right about the brain getting a little silly/cloudy sometimes. It happens to the best of us :-)
Your run sounds amazing. I want it in Oregon. Can you send it my way too?
Great job on all your runs! Your base mileage is very close to my peak mileage :)
Wow lots of running! Great job on the long run! that is way faster than your usual long runs and plus it was 17 miles! You are doing great...those long slow runs are really paying off!
I hate how the weekends go so fast!
Way to just GET OUT THERE and run on thursday. I have those days too, and I'm always so mad at myself when I do decide to skip out. And your 17 mile rocked! Glad you're coming around to realize that... :)
Way to go! Sounds like you still did wonderful even though you were out of town! :) Glad you enjoyed yourself @ your parents too! :)
Great job on the mileage, your still my running hero! :)
A holiday spent running and with the family and the family's dogs. What on earth could be any better?
Great week of running, your discipline with pacing will pay off!
46 miles for the week! I don't think I hit anywhere near that for peak marathon training, & certainly not that for the whole month of June. Good job!
glad you had a nice mix of family and running this weekend. I'm very impressed with the 17 miler over the holiday weekend!!
Your up to 17 milers already. Dang girl.
Great job on the long run...don't beat yourself up too much. We all have set backs but you are smart, and are always learning from each run.
I hate when long weekends end! I need to win the lottery so all I have to do is run!
nice job on the long run! traveling (no matter how close or far) always throws me off, and at least you were still able to force yourself out to run.
i still don't get how on vacation/extra time off i manage to get FURTHER behind on things? (like cleaning, organizing, google reading...)
good job on all of your runs!! sounds like a nice weekend!
Great job getting your long run in while at home and even making up that friday run! You are so dedicated!
I'm sad there are no doggy pics...make sure to take some next time there are that many around!!
Wow, sounds like a great weekend! I'm so impressed that you managed to get the 17-er in despite being away from home--I always have so much trouble with that!
you had a great long run missy!!!! but I know what you mean..my brain gets worked up during long runs sometimes and I have little mental freakouts :-/ great week..keep it up!
Wow! 46 miles is a crapton in my world - and it looked like they were all quality runs too!!
Nice work!
