decisions decisions...

this is why i love bloggers. i really put myself fully into my blog... i am completely honest, i can put my concerns out there, and i get the most incredible feedback. thank you for all your comments on my last post, i don't think i have ever had so many lengthy comments and i love them all!

you all have really helped me to think about this, and really consider what i want to do. pretty much the #1 answer i got was to follow my heart and that i already know what to do. i think that having posted my last post it's pretty obvious where my heart is.

a number of you mentioned racing the half as an alternative. i did forget to mention that i am signed up for a much flatter half marathon the weekend before SFM. i keep forgetting about it even though it's next weekend - oops! we signed up so long ago that it seems like that race would never come. i really don't think i am in PR shape at this moment for a half anyways (give me a few weeks and a few more LT miles), and SFM isn't really a PR course, at least not for me (have you seen the elevation profile?). i am just going to see how it goes that day, how i run, and if i want to tack on the extra miles. i might have to hunt down my friends doing the full in the park and run a couple with them :)

i also forgot to mention that CIM is 9 weeks after cowtown. those 2 races are most important to me, just incase cowtown isn't "the one". i need to be nice to these legs. they have allowed me to cross 4 marathon finish lines in the past year, and i would like them to allow me to cross one in under 3:40:59 sometime this year. i am going to put them through a lot of training in the next 12 weeks, and i know that even if i run SFM slow, it will require more recovery than a flat marathon. it has sharp ups and even worse sharp downhills, that are not nice on the quads. i am finally feeling like my legs are back from two marathons in may, and i really think that SFM would put a damper in my training. i ran san diego easy, 4 weeks after eugene, and although i felt ok, i still needed to recover.

this week is the first time since training for eugene that i really feel mentally focused, ready to train, and ready to tackle the next 12 weeks. i have been doing the runs, but lately my mind has just been all over the place. this week i just feel in the zone and i need to stay there, and i think SFM would take me out of it.

i will still have fun running the half and still be able to enjoy the race scenery and spend time with my friends, and i am most comfortable with that. i don't think i will regret NOT doing the full, but i feel like i COULD regret doing it, and that's not worth the risk to me right now.

i think it's pretty funny that this has even come up as an issue at all. when i crossed the finish line of SFM last year, i remember saying i do not ever want to do that course again. it's funny how we forget :)

so a long winded post to follow some long winded comments... you guys have given me so much to think about in the last 24 hours! i feel good though, happy with my choice, i don't want to have any regrets... obviously it was stressing me out and that shouldn't be the case. i will run the half, focus on my october marathon and then focus on december after that, depending on what happens in october. one at a time.

i am very excited now that this decision is made! i am ready and very excited to get into training. there will hopefully be plenty of other chances to run the full in SFM!

************************************

so i am definitely getting the hang of this morning running. after a rough night of sleep i still got up at 4:45 with the alarm, i didn't even snooze this time! i actually really focused last night on not letting myself play mind games when the alarm did go off. i reminded myself how much i love to run in the morning and how i would not want to go after work today... seemed to do the trick :)

today was my first mid-week ML (medium long) run on the schedule. anything between 11 and 15 miles pfitz classifies as "medium long", and they should be done the same way long runs are done... slower. so in addition to slowing down on my long runs, i am working on slowing down on these ML runs too.

my legs did not argue, they were pretty tired today, but felt good as i got warmed up. i checked my splits when i got home and each mile was faster than the one before... gotta love a good progression run! i am happy with the pace too, not as slow necessarily as he calls for long runs, but slower than i have previously done these.

11.0 miles/1:41:19/9:12 avg pace

thanks again for all the help! you guys are the best :)

sounds like a great plan! you also sound so much calmer in this post than the last. also way to run negative splits on your run today!

I agree, you do sound calmer and much more relaxed....which is great because you will always be prepared for whatever race you decide to do. No worries!

Sounds like you've made a really great decision. Can't wait to see how well you do at each and every one - I have a feeling you've got a string of successful races coming up :)

I think you hit the nail on the head: You won't regret running the half, but you *may* regret running the full. Good thinking, girl!

That being said, we are going to have a blast at NtoS and at SFM...half city!!

Glad to help, I knew you were leaning that way. I TOTALLY thought about running this morning, but after little stud was up several times last night I passed. Maybe tomorrow. I am sooo excited to watch your progress..

FYI I will never do Seattle again, it was too hilly for me, I bet SFM is even worse..

Solid. This is totally your BQ. And if it's not, after Cowtown, you can have a beer on my porch. Its on the course :)

I think you made the right decision. I'm pulling for you to BQ!!

RoadBunner said...

While I will miss you on the full course I think this is the best thing for you. SFM will always be there to run again for fun.

Please, please stop with the "sharp ups and even worse sharp downhills" and saying you never wanted to do that course ever again!! AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Wow! I just read your last post and I have to agree, that I think you made a wise decision. I just KNOW you are going to BQ this year. There is no doubt in my mind.

I find that although I am not a "morning person" I am a "morning runner". Doesnt make sense, but thats how it goes ;)

Great decision-- i agree with Maritza... you really did nail it. You have so much to look forward to & i'm Seriously PUMPED to be out there in December to be apart of all the fun! Great job with the morning runs! :)

Glad you have your mind made up and are happy with your decision. :) I totally didn't realize that your first marathon was less than a year ago (Dec. 08). Is that right?!?! For some reason I thought you had been doing them for years. You just moved up even farther in awesomeness. Hah.

Glad all the blog comments could help you come to a decision. It sounds like you made a good one!

My advice was to post pictures of the doggies. Apparently, you chose to ignore my advice.

Whatever.

Glad you were ablet to figure things out!!!

I think that sounds like the best decision, since the BQ is your main goal. I'm sure that the SFM will always be there to welcome you back next year:)

Have you run the Napa-Sonoma half before? Do you know much about the course? Thanks!

Marlene said...

Glad we could help. :) You seem comfortable with your decision and that's what counts. There will be many marathons in your future!

Nice mid-week mid0distance run. I don't know how you put in that kind of mileage before work.

Have a great weekend!

Glad you're happy with your choice; that's the most important thing.

sounds like the right decision! hooray :)

i like that you just now remembered your thoughts on sfm from last year. 'course after my first marathon i told my parents "don't ever let me sign up for one of these again"! lol... yeah that lasted.

anyway glad you got it all figured out and are happy with your decision. after this post, i am thinking it's the best idea to not overdo it on squeezing in all the fulls!

Cindy said...

woohoo! i'm glad to see you're happy with your decision. and way to go with your early morning running!

Alisa said...

I think you made a good decision, following your first instinct is usually right!

Go you with your early morning runs! Last week, I was all about getting up early even though I was on vacation- this week...eh not so much!

P.S. Another awesome thing about you doing the half---I'll have more spectators at the finish line for me since I'll be last out of the group.

Sounds like a great decision! Now you can focus all your energy on your goals! Good luck training and have fun! BQ is yours!

PS I chose not to run one of my favorite marathons this summer because I was just coming off a half ironman the weekend before...I thought I'd be really bummed about not doing it (I ran the half for the first time instead)...turns out I almost PR'd the half and had a really great weekend. Sometimes it's just nice to take a break and stay focused on your A race :o)

Sounds like a great plan, Aron! It's amazing how figuring out a plan that works for you makes you feel so much calmer and at ease!

I look forward to reading more about your training and aspiring towards your very-attainable goals!

Great plan aron! No regrets!!!

Also nice job on the run this morning. 4:45 is so early... I'll never complain again :)

Susan said...

I'm glad you developed a plan that will fit more with your long term goals...and keep you (and your legs!) sane!

I have no clue how you could get up at 4:45...that is crazy!

I think you've made the decision that's best for you--and that is SO great. This stuff can be so difficult to figure out, but you seriously did a great job thinking it through and focusing on the long term goals. Way to go :)

Now, can I just mention again how impressed I am that you can get up that early and get the ML runs in? WOW.

Scheri said...

Good decision :-) Your runs are going so well. Good job!!! I'm having a heck of a time getting up early these days. It isn't supposed to be like that during the summer!

J said...

Sounds like you have everything figured out! I am sure that with the hills SFM would be a tough course to quickly recover from. Great job on the progression run! Its nice to let your legs warm up and get moving!

Sounds like a solid plan - glad you've got it figured out :)

Funny, I've been reading your blog so long, that I knew what you would choose!

Great job and choice. I had a few of your posts to catch up with, so it was nice too see you selected the Half.

I hear SFM is a bear...I don't even want to think about it since I'll be sorta there in Oct.

Congrats.

I'm sorry I didn't weigh in there on time but you sound like you've worked it out and for what it's worth it very much sounds like the right decision. I know what you mean about the mindset - it's got to come - and you've got it now. GOod luck!

I find that once you get used to morning workouts, you tend to feel like you missed out if you skip them. It was, for me, a huge adjustment, but now my morning workouts are my favorite. Great job with avoiding the snooze!!

Candice @ I Have Run said...

Way to go on the morning runs! I know how hard it can be to get up before the sun and how easy it is to push the snooze button!

Runner Leana said...

It sounds like you made a good decision. I know the BQ is important to you, so you definitely want to focus on that. I think it is hard to run any race as a "training" run. I'm just too competitive, or I get too caught up in the excitement. And 26.2 miles is a long training run!

Great job on all of your running! Sounds like things are going well!
