yesterday morning i had my alarm set to get up for a pretty big run. everything was set out like usual, clothes in the bathroom, garmin and headlamp in the kitchen, and the coffee pot was set. for whatever reason when my alarm started going off the next morning i just could NOT get up. i hit snooze a million times (which always kind of makes me laugh, if i am not going to get up why not just reset the alarm so i can get some restful sleep instead of torturing myself through an hour of re-hitting the snooze) and before i knew it, it was 6am.
i laid there for a few minutes debating what i was going to do. i could just postpone my run until after work, but i also knew there was potential for me to get stuck at work late which would just stress me out. so i sucked it up, got out of bed, got dressed and put my shoes on. i figured any run was better than no run.
i made it out the door for 6 miles. my legs didn't feel great, i felt tired, but i got it done. i added some strides into the later miles to get my legs feeling better, and you know what? they did.
6.0 miles/54:43/9:07 avg pace
this morning i had another early morning date with tara. originally i was going to do 6 miles, but decided that since i did my 6 yesterday, i would do the longer run today. i WOULD get up since i was meeting her, then i could do my warm up miles with her and then do some speed work.
my alarm went off at 4 and i was out of bed 10 minutes later. we met at our usual spot and ran around in the dark. you are probably going to get sick of me saying this, but it is SO nice to have someone to meet. we have very nice chats running around the dark streets and very early hours in the morning, and its fun!
i was being a whiny baby this morning, not wanting to do my speed workout. i was thinking up excuses like i could just do it later that night on the treadmill, or i could somehow switch it to the next day. i just was not in the mood. i was tired and i was hungry. after 6.6 miles with tara, i left her at her house, and headed back out for some more miles. i figured at the least i could just do a medium-long run and get the miles in. i took a gu to help give me some energy for the rest of the run and it seemed to help.
it was light out by this point and i could jump on the trail, so i did. once i got there cold air rushed over me, i turned my ipod on, and thought "ok aron lets just get this done". the schedule calls for 6x1000m intervals this week, but i wanted to do some more lactate threshold (LT) miles because i feel like they work for me. i told myself 4 LT miles is better than no LT miles and off i went.
LT miles:
1: 7:46
2: 7:38
3: 7:36
4: 7:32
avg: 7:38!
i felt great and kept being surprised when i would look down and see my pace. i probably could have kept going, but i was already going to be late for work and knew i would have put in quite a bit of weekday miles in already. i did a quick cool down back to my car to finish off the run and round off the miles, and was very happy with myself.
total run: 13.0 miles/1:54:39/8:49 avg pace
so on those days when you don't want to get out there or don't want to get speedwork done, just get out there and do something. no matter what something is better than nothing.

Fast! All I can say is CIM had better watch out.
I had my very first early morning (well early for me) run scheduled for this morning and you know what I did? I turned my alarm off and accidentally fell back asleep. Total fail on my part. Props to you for getting up super early and running.
I REALLY NEED A RUNNING BUDDY!! You are gonna rock it at CIM! So excited! And you're totally right, some miles are better than none. Happy Thursday!! :)
I've totally been there with those debates. AND with the hitting of the snooze (i hit snooze for 2 hours one morning...). It's rough. Great job on getting up! And great job on kicking butt. I need a running buddy out here!
I feel like I've been having this debate EVERY morning lately! I promise to try to not be such a slacker/flaker!
Great job on the speedy miles!!!! Your legs seem to respond well to the pushing so keep it up!! You will OWN CIM! ♥
Meeting up with someone makes the getting up early WAY easier. Nice job on both runs!
Great job! Your workouts just keep getting faster and faster. I would be so confident about next month if I were you.
You're proof that we should all just try for a few miles - and yours always seem to end up so fantastic! Good work!
Meeting someone to run with makes all the difference in the world. Good job!
Definitely better than nothing and 13 miles is better than any ol' something. Great workout for a day when you weren't really feeling it. You always impress me with your AM workouts.
"something is better than nothing" SO TRUE!! you are soooo fast. and so motivational for when i don't want to get out of bed at 6...you got up at FOUR!? :)
You're probably sick of me saying this...but 13 miles BEFORE work?? You're crazy! I can't believe you wake up at 4am...I wish I had the kind of motivation. I'm lucky I don't work until 3pm so I can hit snooze all I want...until I realized I've slept away the day.
You're going to do awesome at CIM...all this hard work!
Look out CIM here comes Aron aka Speedy Gonzalez!!!
Thanks for the tip! You are so right. :D
Those were definitely some rockin' LT miles, woohoo!
Isn't having an RB great? It's getting to be really crucial now that it's dark and cold!
i am a new runner and have been enjoying your blog for a few weeks now (very inspirational). a question: when you run LT miles do you do them consecutively or do you have any rest interval in between?
rachel - LT or tempo miles are done consecutively (unless i hit a stop light or something)... mile repeats/1600m intervals have a rest in between. there are some plans with LT intervals sessions too, but i haven't done any.
this link has a good description of all the different types of runs i do in my training plan: http://pfitzinger.com/marathontraining.shtml
OK, so I have no idea how you do speed work so early in the morning. WOW! No one deserves to get to Boston more than you!!!
13 miles before work? Impressive!
You are awesome. I have to hit the snooze button to get my son ready for school, let alone fitting in 13 miles before all that!
Something IS way better than nothing! Way to go so far this week girl! I am in awe of the 4 am wake-up call.
Wow you are fast!...and starting at 4a.m. Ouch. I am envious of your drive and running partner. You are going to kill your marathon!
Nice work!! 13 miles before work-I wish I could do that! Looks like your marathon training is coming along quite nicely! You'll do awesome!!
oh man, those runs are the best. the ones you just do NOT want to do, and then you convince yourself to just DO them with whatever personal bribery works for you, and then they just turn out AWESOME. And too funny, your 13 mile run is my exact HM PR. ;) Miss Speedy Legs.
Yay Tara! Just kidding... good job this morning. Getting up is SO hard but it's worth it. We're getting so close.
I feel you on the early wake up calls and dreading the miles...it is tought to stay motivated!
I can't wait to see how it all pays off for you at CIM!
I hope you had a yummy latte or some yummy dessert later to reward yourself for your amazing work out! Go Aron!
your so ready for CIM girl! even though you struggled getting up you ROCKED your run! You own your LT miles every time! Way to go!
Great run Aron! Let's definitely have a better showing this year at CIM than last.
Keep it going girl, long and strong.
I've felt like a whiny baby all week! Boo hoo! Great paces on your run!
omg! i don't know HOW you do it!
4am is NOT an hour I like to be conscious for on a weekday!! but you are simply amazing--13 miles BEFORE work at dawn. You're going to grab that BQ!!
Way to go, Aron. I've often found that I feel better once I get out the door to. That was especially true for me with swimming, which for the longest time I used to hate and look for reasons not to do it. Whine, whine, whine.
Great run!!
I so find meeting someone in the morning is a surefire way for me to GO!
I also think it's safer now that it's dark out =).
Good job getting it done! I agree, something is always better than nothing.
Yeah, something is better than nothing. As long as you aren't pushing an injury! LOL. Way to go speedy!!
wow Aron - 4am! Thats early!!! I wish someone would get up with me that early (or even 5am) to run. Sometimes Brian comes with me but he is not a morning person at all!! Great job on the runs!
that has totally been my mantra since college!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i love that you came upon the same thing. and it is TRUE.
good for you, you are winning some of the hardest battles. i am super proud of you!!! and WAY TO GO on your LT miles.
you're doing AWESOME.
p.s. i never did understand the snooze button over and over again. elliot will do that and i yell at him. lol.
Good for you. I have to say that I don't think that I could EVER get out of bed at 4am....an inspiration!
Totally amazing. You are a work horse ;)
It's good to know I'm not the only one who has those mornings where you're all prepped, but just not feeling it. :) Great job on getting out there and getting some (or rather, a lot) of miles in!
I will ALWAYS agree with that - I've NEVER had a run that left me thinking "i wish I hadn't done that". You always feel better, no matter what the pace/distance/whatever. Even if it's not your *best* effort, you still got out there! :)
LT miles AFTER 6.6 already in? Now thats impressive. :) nice tempo!
Wow, you rocked those LT miles!
You're right, something is always better than nothing. And one mile usually leads to two, then three, then...
Great job adjusting your plans and getting something done. And wow, that was really something! haha. That pace is impressive considering it was at the end of a long run. Well done girlie!!! :)
Nice pace at the end of a long run - I like what you can do when you're not really into it - imagine what you can do when you are!
I am totally guilty of hitting the snooze over and over again instead of just re-setting it. I guess I don't feel as bad if I hit the snooze instead of just going back to sleep altogether.
Yes, something is better than nothing and in the end you are always glad you went out.
Great workout!!
very true my friend. always better than 0! nice job on the LT miles!
This is SO true. I am going to remember this the next time I'm in a similar situation (which will probably be Monday, since tomorrow is a rest day--hehe). You are so wise, girl! :)
Isn't that the truth? I think that we've all had these days. Anything is better than nothing indeed!!
